Why does my account have a shifter and a business profile?

The reasoning behind the dual-profile model and how to use it.

Every ShiftSee account auto-provisions both a shifter profile and a business profile at signup. You toggle between them via the Shifter / Business pill in the top-left.

Why?

A lot of small business owners are also shifters. The bartender who runs Saturday brunch at her café might pick up Monday-night shifts at her friend's bar. The line cook who freelances three nights a week also runs his own catering business on weekends.

We didn't want any user to have to manage two accounts.

What does the auto-business look like?

The default business is named with your full name (e.g., "Pat Smith"). It's flagged with is_default = true, which:

  • Makes it undeletable
  • Bubbles it to the top of your business list with a You pill
  • Hides it from public directories until you choose to make it real (give it a real name, address, etc.)

This default business is the one you act as when you connect to other businesses as a shifter (since connections are always shifter-to-business).

"I'll never need the other profile"

That's fine. Ignore it. The dual-profile model is there when you need it; nothing forces you to use both. Most users only ever look at one.
